Assembly OKs bill to repay special election costs
"A bill cleared the state Assembly late Thursday with minutes to spare that provides for $39 million to pay back California's 58 counties for costs associated with the special election. El Dorado County is in line for $216,000 and Nevada County would receive $142,000.
If it's given final approval by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the funding could be on its way to the Placer County Clerk-Recorder's Office by October. Ryan Ronco, assistant registrar of voters, said that the money will be held by the office until it's determined whether it will be needed as temporary funding for a recall election that could take place in the Sierra College district. Signatures are now being gathered for a recall of trustees Aaron Klein and Jerry Simmons. If the funding isn't required, it will be returned to the county's general fund.
With the state reimbursement, as well as previous payments from special districts, the November recall is on target to be fully paid for, Ronco said.
State reimbursement for a special election with statewide measures on it would be in line with past practices, he said."
The story is here.
