"Council says no to mail-in election"

"A proposal to conduct San Diego's special mayoral election by mail July 26 was junked by the City Council last night.

City Clerk Charles Abdelnour recommended the mail-in ballot election last week as a cost-saving measure for cash-strapped San Diego, and Mayor Dick Murphy asked the council to give it "careful consideration."

But Murphy reversed course after several colleagues raised concerns about a radical departure being proposed just two months before the important election, when voters also will decide the fate of the Mount Soledad cross."
